Arkansas Razorbacks vs. Tennessee Volunteers: Can Bobby Petrino Pull Off the Upset?

The Arkansas Razorbacks football program has been shaken up with major coaching changes, and now all eyes are on the upcoming matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers. With Bobby Petrino back in the driver’s seat and a restructured staff that includes assistants with Super Bowl rings, Razorback fans are wondering: could this be the perfect storm for an SEC upset?

Coaching Shake-Up: Bobby Petrino Returns

Following the departure of Sam Pittman, Arkansas turned to Bobby Petrino as interim head coach. Known for his offensive brilliance and fiery competitive nature, Petrino has already made bold moves:

  • Revamped the defensive staff, bringing in Chris Wilson, who earned a Super Bowl ring with the Philadelphia Eagles.

  • Kept offensive play-calling responsibilities for himself, ensuring the Razorbacks’ attack carries his trademark style.

This shake-up isn’t just about X’s and O’s — it’s about changing the culture and injecting urgency into a team that desperately needed new direction.

Two Weeks to Prepare: A Rare Advantage

Most midseason coaching changes lead to chaos. Arkansas, however, benefits from a two-week prep window before facing Tennessee. That time matters:

  • Healing up injuries: Players return fresher and sharper.

  • Installing schemes: The new defensive staff can actually make meaningful changes.

  • Petrino’s preparation: He now has two full weeks to tailor an offensive game plan aimed directly at Tennessee’s weaknesses.

This isn’t a bandage job. It’s a legitimate reset.

Tennessee’s Strengths and Vulnerabilities

The Volunteers are still the betting favorite, with sportsbooks listing Tennessee at –11.5 over Arkansas. Their edge is real:

  • Defensive dominance: Tennessee ranks among the SEC’s best in third-down stops and pass rush.

  • Explosive offense: Averaging 550+ yards per game, they can strike quickly through the air.

  • Program stability: Unlike Arkansas, Tennessee enjoys coaching continuity and roster cohesion.

But there are cracks:

  • Defense bends: They allow nearly 29 points per game, showing they can be worn down.

  • Red zone inconsistency: The Vols have struggled to keep opponents out of the end zone.

  • Turnover risk: Mistakes can flip momentum, and Arkansas must capitalize.

Bobby Petrino’s Blueprint for an Arkansas Upset

To beat Tennessee, the Razorbacks must execute a bold, aggressive plan:

1. Script and Strike First

Petrino’s scripted opening drives are legendary. Expect Arkansas to come out fast, mixing tempo and quick passes to shock Tennessee early.

2. Quick Passing Game

Screens, slants, and RPOs neutralize Tennessee’s pass rush. The ball must come out quick.

3. Attack the Edges

Jet sweeps, perimeter runs, and misdirection plays stretch the defense and force safeties into tough spots.

4. Convert in the Red Zone

Field goals won’t cut it. Arkansas must finish drives with touchdowns.

5. Force Tennessee into Third-and-Long

Defensively, Arkansas must take away explosive plays and disguise coverages to frustrate Tennessee’s quarterback.

Intangibles: Why This Game Feels Different

  • Petrino’s redemption arc: Back in Fayetteville, he wants to prove he still belongs in SEC football.

  • Super Bowl credibility: Assistants with championship experience bring instant respect and fresh mentality.

  • Trap game energy: Tennessee may look ahead, but Arkansas will treat this like their Super Bowl.

Odds and Probabilities

  • Vegas line: Tennessee –11.5.

  • Estimated win probability: Arkansas has a 35–45% chance with the bye week, new staff, and Petrino’s game plan.

For Arkansas, the path to victory is clear:

  • Win the turnover battle.

  • Score first.

  • Control red zone opportunities.

  • Steal momentum on special teams.

Do all four, and Razorback Nation may witness one of the biggest upsets of the SEC season.

Final Word: Old Bobby Wants the Win

Make no mistake: Tennessee is still the better team on paper. But college football thrives on chaos — and Bobby Petrino is built for chaos. With two weeks to prepare, assistants wearing Super Bowl rings, and a locker room desperate to rally, the Arkansas Razorbacks have more than just a puncher’s chance.

Old Bobby wants this win, and that makes Arkansas dangerous.

Hog Fans, It’s Official: Pittman Out, Petrino Back In

Well, Hog Nation… it finally happened. Sam Pittman is out. The man who took over in 2019, gave us a little grit back, and had some moments of hope — he’s done. After that blowout against Notre Dame, the university pulled the plug.

And who’s stepping in? Bobby. Freakin’. Petrino.

Yeah, you read that right. The man, the myth, the scandal, the offensive wizard — is now running the show again in Fayetteville. Interim, sure. But make no mistake, all eyes are on him.

My Thoughts as a Fan

Look, I respect Sam Pittman. The guy was genuine, he loved this program, and he brought back some fight. But let’s be real — 32–34 ain’t gonna cut it in the SEC. Too many Saturdays we looked lost. Too many times we thought “next year”. That Notre Dame game? It was the last straw.

Now Petrino… man, this is wild. The last time he was here, we were actually scary. The man knows how to cook up an offense. Yeah, the way it ended was ugly. Real ugly. But here we are in 2025, and suddenly the Razorbacks are his again.

What I’m Watching

  • The Offense → Can Petrino light a fire under this team fast?

  • The Locker Room → Do these players buy in, or check out?

  • The Future → Is this a tryout for him to be the permanent guy? Or is this just a Band-Aid until the next coach search?

Bottom Line

I don’t know about you, but I’m fired up. Nervous? Heck yeah. Excited? Even more. This program needed a shakeup, and buddy, we just got one.

So here’s the deal: whether you love it or hate it, Razorback football just got interesting again.

Time to stand up, Hog fans. Time to yell louder than ever.
